Our Mission


The School of Entrepreneurship (SCENT) was established in January 2014 with the mission to study and promote entrepreneurship and innovation. In order to reach his goal, SCENT dynamically operates on three different levels:

  • Producing new knowledge on innovative startups and early stage entrepreneurship
  • Developing education programs in technology-based and innovative entrepreneurship
  • Creating a community to share entrepreneurial expertise

Research activities


The School of Entrepreneurship is active on a number of initatives related to startups, early stage entrepreneurship, investments, social entrepreneurship.

Data Science in Entrepreneurship Research
Over the last few years, the group has carried out intensive research activities on startup companies and equity investments by using advanced data-driven approaches. In this context, information from several well-established data sources have been integrated with each other, thus obtaining a robust data platform for the application of data mining techniques. Specifically, both machine learning and deep learning algorithms have been implemented to analyze the key elements of successful technology-driven startups.
Technology-based Startup Monitor
Technology based startups are fundamental for high growth entrepreneurship. This type of entrepreneurship is crucial to local, regional and national economic development due to higher job multiplier effects. We analyze technology based startups at the global level.
Startup Investor Monitor
The Startup Investors Monitor, developed by SCENT, aims at studying the interactions between startups and venture firms whose mission is to help innovative companies developing their business.
Research to Entrepreneurship (R>ENT)
Many promising research projects can give origin to a new entrepreneurial venture. The School of Entrepreneurship investigates the attitudes and intentions of young researchers to start a new business out of the results of their own research.
Entrepreneurial Ecosystems

High-tech entrepreneurial ecosystems are a specific type of ecosystems focusing on fostering technology-based entrepreneurship. Understanding how these ecosystems work is useful for central and regional governments in formulating strategies for economic development.

Social Entrepreneurship
The School of Entrepreneurship conducts research of academic and practical relevance on social entrepreneurship to support social enterprises, practitioners and policy makers. It collaborates with international organizations promoting social entrepreneurship such as the United Nations Industrial Development organization’s Entrepreneurship for Social Change Programme.
GEM
Global Entrepreneurship Monitor
GEM is the largest ongoing study of entrepreneurial dynamics in the world. GEM explores the role of entrepreneurship in national economic growth, The GEM research in Italy has been planned and executed by SCENT at the University of Padova from 2012 to 2016.

SCENT educational offer is made up of four courses focused on innovative entrepreneurship.

  • Innovation Entrepreneurship and Finance

  • Prof. Moreno Muffatto
  • The course enables students to acquire the skills needed to pursue an innovation project both from an entrepreneurial point of view (new startup creation) and from a managerial point of view (management of innovation).
  • The course is mainly aimed at engineering students, but can be attended also by students with different background.
  • 1st semester (9 ECTS): 28 September 2021 - 15 January 2022

  • Entrepreneurship and Startup
    A course in Entrepreneurship for PhD students and Post-Docs. Look at the contents

  • Universities have a large enterprise-creation potential that is still underutilized. The course aims to improve the entrepreneurial knowledge of researchers in order to let them translate scientific results in an entrepreneurial venture.
  • The course is mainly aimed at PhD students, Post-Docs and researchers of the University of Padova.

  • The course provides an understanding of the main business processes that concern market relationship, new products and services development, production processes, product and service quality management, human resource management.
  • The course is mainly aimed at engineering students, but can be attended also by students with different background.

  • SCENT Ventures Program
  • Master Universitario in Project Management e Gestione dell’Innovazione - Executive program

  • Director: Prof. Moreno Muffatto
  • Since 2004, the executive program has contributed to the growth and organizational development of SMEs, healthcare systems and local governments. So far, more than 450 professionals attended the program.
  • The program is aimed at project and innovation managers and people engaged in organizational transformation.

Moreno Muffatto

Founder of the School of Entrepreneurship (SCENT) at the University of Padova Coordinator of the Research Team on Management and Entrepreneurship, Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Padova.
Full professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Padova.
Founder and Director, Master Program in Project and Innovation Management.

Francesco Ferrati

Francesco Ferrati is Postdoc researcher in Entrepreneurship. He got his PhD in Management Engineering at the University of Padova, Italy. His research activity is focused on the analysis of startup companies in the Entrepreneurial Finance research stream. In his work he applies data mining and machine learning techniques for the analysis of large datasets in the business domain.

Negalegn Alemu

Negalegn Alemu is PhD student in Management Engineering at the University of Padova, Italy. He holds a MSc in Industrial Engineering from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. Currently, he is working a research in the area of Consumer Internet of Things (IoT) and startups in the field.

Tirufat Dejene

Tirufat Dejene is a PhD student in Management Engineering at the University of Padova, Italy. She holds a MSc in Industrial Engineering from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. She has worked in manufacturing industries and currently, she is carrying out her research activity in the area of Emerging Business Models in Circular Economy.

Former members

Ali Raza

Ali Raza is Lecturer in Business Management at Teesside University Business School, UK. Former member of the research team at SCENT. He got his PhD at the University of Padova. He has done his MS in Business Administration from Hajvery University, (Pakistan) with Gold Medal. His areas of interests include entrepreneurial development at the country level with special focus on national cultural, economic, political, and regulatory dimensions.

Michael Sheriff

Michael Sheriff is Teaching Fellow at the Science Policy Research Unit of the University of Sussex Business School, UK. He holds a European Ph.D. in Management Engineering and a M.Eng. in Project and Innovation Management from the University of Padova. He also holds a B.Eng. (Hons.) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sierra Leone. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is focused on Social Entrepreneurship.

Saadat Saeed

Saadat Saeed is Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship, Durham University Business School (UK). Former member of the research team at SCENT. He got is PhD at the University of Padova. His research interests are in the field of: University entrepreneurship; Institutions and entrepreneurship; Women entrepreneurship.

Aldo Salinas

Aldo Salinas is Lecturer and Reseacher at Universidad de Especialidades Espíritu Santo - ESAI Business School, Ecuador. Former member of the research team at SCENT. He got is PhD in Management Engineering at the University of Padova.
